Bruce Leslie – Managing Director of the LC Group of companies – recently provided the Australian Institute of Energy with his insights to the potential for Solar Thermal Power in this country. The Brisbane branch of the AIE were told that just 800 square kilometers (28km x 28km) of mirrored surface could provide enough solar thermal output for the whole of Australia’s power needs.
Solar thermal plants distributed along electrical / gas infrastructure networks could provide huge input into fulfilling the power needs of the national grid. Bruce noted that solar energy must be considered as a natural resource for Australia.
High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) is beginning to open up the world’s grid to solar resources. With a worldwide total of HVDC cable runs of 2,000km, the transmitted power stands at around 3GW (Giga-Watt). With losses of less than 3% per 1,000km of cable, HVDC is proving to be an excellent method of transporting power to other regions where power resources are limited.
Bruce went on to say that with Indonesia, Phillipines and South-East Asis all within 4,000km of Western Australia we have excellent potential for energy export.
